The series was announced for UKTV in February 2024, with Chris Lang writing the script and Federation Stories producing. Tom Vaughan directed, and Nickie Sault produced. Executive producers included Polly Williams, Arielle Gottlieb, Lang, and Vaughan. The cast was led by John Simm and Nikki Amuka-Bird, with Trevor Eve, Daniel Rigby, Ruby Serkis, Harry Lloyd, Liz Kingsman, and James Fleet among those joining in March 2024. Filming began in March 2024, and first-look images were released in August 2024.

The first series aired in the United Kingdom on U&Alibi from 23 April 2025, and later on BBC One and iPlayer from 12 July 2026. A title card at the end of the final episode stated 'to be continued'. In March 2026, a second series was acquired by the BBC, with Nikki Amuka-Bird, John Simm, Daniel Rigby, Ruby Ashbourne Serkis, and Harry Lloyd returning. Two new characters were to be played by Tom Austen and Zora Bishop. Filming for series 2 started in February 2026, and it will air on BBC One and iPlayer in the U.K., and on BritBox in the U.S.

I, Jack Wright received mixed to positive reviews. Ben Dowell for The Times praised the stellar cast but criticised the character development of minor characters. Michael Hogan for The Daily Telegraph awarded four stars, praising production values and the cast, as well as the use of flash-forward interviews that 'added momentum, seeded clues and left the plot intriguingly poised'. James Hibbs for the Radio Times thought it worked as a character study and family drama with enough twists, but disliked the flash-forward interviews as 'tacked on' and 'a bit cheap'. Lenny Ann Low for The Sydney Morning Herald compared it to Succession and Agatha Christie, calling it 'a riot of fun' with believable characters and beautiful cinematography. The series is notable for its ensemble cast and its shift from UKTV to BBC for the second series.
